Whitening is one of the easiest, most commonly requested and obvious treatment options taken by patients to improve the appearance of their teeth. Whitening can be carried out instantly as a chair-side procedure using the famous Zoom technique, or it can be completed with take-home kits, or a combination of both. It is important that whitening is carried out by a qualified profession to ensure it is a safe treatment option.
Existing anterior fillings and crowns do not whiten. If your natural teeth have discoloured against existing old crowns, then this can present as a mis-match in your smile. Treatment following whitening therefore may also include the replacement of old fillings and crowns to achieve the best complete results.
On some occasions, there is a limit to what can be achieved with simple cosmetic options. If this still proves to not fulfil the wishes of a patient, we can assess the smile and the patient’s wishes by completing a smile design visit. This includes taking models, photographs and assessing any features that are disliked. From this we would aim to prepare a set of diagnostic models to present to the patient with what can be achieved.
Is teeth whitening safe?
In suitable patients and when carried out by a dental professional tooth whitening can be a very safe and effective procedure. Under the supervision of your dentist, teeth whitening can be completed in-surgery or at home. Both methods produce excellent results and you should ask your dentist which method is most suitable for your needs. Teeth whitening doesn’t affect the strength of your teeth, the only side effect that is sometimes experienced is sensitivity, but this will subside after a short time.
